Drum Making Workshop with Carey Sinclair
Drum Making Workshop with Carey Sinclair
This unique workshop is a special opportunity to learn about Indigenous drum-making and create a beautiful drum.
A drum is a medicine used as the heartbeat of Mother Earth that is a tool for a connection to and relationship with all living things and Creator. The drum voices our connection to all creation and when we drum together it strengthens our connection to each other.
The circle is unbroken and made of equal, connected, and infinite points. The Creator is the center, around which all living things—including humans, revolve. Each animal, plant, and human is the same distance from this center and has a unique and direct connection to it.
The making of a drum is a two-day sacred event to create this tool as a medicine for your personal use. On the first day Carey will lead the group in teachings and the making of the drum. Once the drums are made they will rest. After the drums have rested, we will come together for a potluck feast. We will eat together and connect to the spirit of the drum. Your drum will be woken up in a drumming circle through song (prayer) with a celebration potluck feast included as part of the drumming circle.
After the workshop and the Feast, you will have a beautiful 12-inch drum, a mallet, and instructions on how to keep your drum in good condition. The tradition is to give away your first drum as a teaching. You will be encouraged to give your drum to someone in the workshop and receive a drum from someone else in the workshop as a gift. This practice is optional.
